Two people were injured in a one-vehicle accident early Tuesday morning on Interstate 90 that initially sent Jackson Fire Department and Ambulance Service crew members on a 15-minute goose chase all over the countryside.
Fire department and ambulance service personnel were put on standby around 1:10 a.m. by dispatch for what was initially termed a “possible car accident.”
According to dispatch, a 911 call had been made by a party claiming to have been in a one-vehicle accident on I-90, though the party was unsure where exactly. Fire and ambulance crew members took off in both directions moments later.
Dispatch remained on the line with the party and, utilizing the vehicle’s global positioning satellite technology, was able to pinpoint the location of the crash site as a half-mile east of Alpha. At that point, the Alpha Fire Department and First Responders were paged.
Rescue crews finally located the vehicle in a field about a half-mile east of the Alpha exit on the south side of the interstate around 1:25 a.m.
Injured in the accident were the driver, Larry T. Dressell, 65, of Waterford, Mich., and his passenger, Larry C. Dressell, 26, also of Waterford. Both suffered back injuries and bruising and were transferred to Sioux Falls, S.D., for evaluation; Minnesota State Patrol troopers classified the injuries as “non-serious” and said neither injury was life-threatening.
According to an on-scene investigation by the state patrol, Dressell’s 2008 Ford pickup was traveling west on I-90 when it left the roadway near mile marker 80, drifted into the median, hit the crossover, crossed the eastbound lands, entered the south ditch and went through a fence into a field. Damage to the vehicle was listed as “severe.”
Later Tuesday morning, troopers confirmed alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
