Mayor: Years to learn water manager job
Though the manager of the city’s water department doesn’t plan to retire for another seven years, Jackson Mayor Mitch Jasper and members of the city’s utilities commission think the time to advertise the job is now.
Commission members last week forwarded a recommendation to the Jackson City Council to begin advertising for Steve Beckel’s replacement.
Jasper initiated the conversation at last Monday’s regular commission meeting. He said the advanced timeline was warranted in this case due to the importance of the job and the fact that Beckel’s second-in-command, Ron Bezdicek, has indicated he will leave the city upon Beckel’s departure.
Jasper said an ideal situation would be to promote from within and hire someone several years in advance of Beckel’s retirement. The individual can then learn the job, understand the water system and acquire the necessary license before Beckel leaves, Jasper said.
Jasper said he and Beckel believe a person needs to be in the water department four or five years in order to adequately learn the system.
The council began advertising in September for a replacement for Jackson City Administrator Dean Albrecht, who will retire in March 2010.
