FB: Several Huskies honorec by SWC
The Jackson County Central football team swept the Southwest Conference in regular season play this year and nearly swept the conference’s individual awards, as announced Monday.
The Huskies landed six players on the first team and had three more named to the honorable mention team.
Seniors Taylor Menke, Joel Hartzler, Alex Hohenstein, Collin Munoz and Trevon Bargfrede and junior Jordan Phibbs were all first-team performers. Seniors Skylar Prochaska and Matt Buschena and junior Steven Salzwedel were named to the honorable mention squad.
Hohenstein was named the conference’s offensive lineman of the year for his work as the Huskies’ center. Hartzler was named offensive back of the year after throwing for 1,299 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushing for 571 yards and nine touchdowns. Phibbs was named co-defensive back of the year as a dominating linebacker.
Hohenstein, Munoz and Buschena anchored an offensive line that allowed the Huskies to rush for 2,559 yards and throw for 1,348 in a season in which the team finished 9-2.
Menke rushed for a team–leading 612 yards and scored seven touchdowns as a running back. Prochaska rushed for 541 yards and five scores. Both seniors anchored the defense, with Menke intercepting a pass and recovering two fumbles from his safety position and Prochaska recovering three fumbles as a linebacker.
Bargfrede was the team’s big-play receiver, hauling in 36 passes for 530 yards and six touchdowns. He also played cornerback on defense.
Phibbs rushed for 330 yards and two scores on offense but was even more impressive on defense, intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble.
Salzwedel was a shut-down cornerback on a defense that gave up fewer than 70 yards through the air per game.
Others named to the first team list were Nick Meyer (Sr., Luverne), Josh Boomgaarden (Sr., Luverne), Britton Stratton (Jr., Luverne), Cody Hemme (Jr., Luverne), Zane Aubert (Jr., Luverne), Taylor Jolitz (Sr., Pipestone), Shandon Jones (Sr., Pipestone), Brandon Alfson (Sr., Pipestone), Michael Merrill (Sr., Pipestone), Brennan Cable (Jr., Marshall), Luke Klein (Sr., Marshall), Todd Hennen (Sr., Marshall), Nick Eisenmenger (Sr., Windom), Jake Holt (Soph., Windom), Mitch Jensen (Sr., Worthington) and Nick Verdoes (Sr., Redwood Valley).
Others on the honorable mention team were Michael Graff (Sr., Luverne), Ryan Hoff (Sr., Luverne), Jon Gorter (Jr., Pipestone), Cody Schulze (Sr., Pipestone), Rudy Retamoza (Jr., Marshall), Curt Nagorske (Jr., Windom), Sam Landberg (Sr., Worthington) and Erich Panitzke (Sr., Redwood Valley).
Cable was named the defensive lineman of the year. Windom Area’s Danny Martinez and Marshall’s Beau Bofferding were the specialists of the year.
Schuller honored
JCC head coach Tom Schuller was named the conference’s coach of the year after leading his team to a 6-0 record in the conference. His Huskies outscored conference opponents 154-33 and shut out Worthington, Pipestone Area and Windom Area in the regular season.
“It’s a credit to our entire coaching staff and all our players,” Schuller said of the award, typically given to the coach of the conference champion. “I wish we could get it every year.”
