Several area utility facilities are facing changes or the expiration of their current pollution permits and the public has an opportunity to comment this week before the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency makes a decision on whether to reissue the permits.
The applicants include the wastewater treatment facilities in Okabena and Brewster, the Heron Lake BioEnergy ethanol plant and Interstate Power and Light Co.’s Fox Lake Station at Sherburn.
Okabena obtained its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System/State Disposal System Permit on Nov. 30, 2004, and it expired Oct. 31. Brewster’s treatment plant was permitted Dec. 23, 2004, and expires Nov. 30. Heron Lake BioEnergy is seeking an upgraded air emission permit to replace its 2005 original. IPL is applying to have its air emission permit reissued with no new emissions. It had applied for the original permit in May 2001.
The public has until Dec. 3 to comment on the wastewater treatment facilities’ requests for new permits, Dec. 4 on the power plant and Dec. 11 on the ethanol plant.
