JCWHOF inductees announced
Six more people will be inducted into the Jackson County Wrestling Hall of Fame next week when the induction ceremony takes place.
This year’s inductees are Craig Muir, Marc Harwood, Todd Card, Dave Hanson, Gene Michelson and Kent Johnson.
The induction ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Jackson County Central High School auditorium.
The Huskies host Pipestone Area that night and the night also serves as a celebration for 50 years of wrestling in the county.
Craig Muir
Craig Muir was the first state place winner in Jackson County history when he finished fourth at the state tournament in 1964. The junior finished second at the Region 2 meet that season to qualify for state.
Muir advanced to state as a senior in 1965 after winning the district title but did not place. He finished that season with a 20-2 record.
Marc Harwood
Marc Harwood was one of the most successful wrestlers in the state, finishing his career with a record of 190-25. His 190 career wins puts him tied for 63rd all time in the state, but when Harwood graduated in 2002, his 190 wins was in the top 20 in state history.
Harwood didn’t lose a match in his final two seasons, going 38-0 as a senior and 44-0 as a junior. He won state championships both seasons. Harwood also qualified for state two other times, finishing fourth in 2000 and sixth in 1999.
Harwood was part of two team state titles as the Huskies won the state championship in 1999 and 2000.
Harwood wrestled at the University of Nebraska after graduating from JCC and is currently the head coach at Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Todd Card
Todd Card was an assistant coach at Jackson High School beginning in 1990 and stayed with the program through its days as Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield-Jackson and finally JCC.
Card was co-head coach with Randy Baker during the HLOLJ days before Baker became head coach when JCC was formed in 1997.
Card helped the Huskies win the state title in 1999 and went to Hutchinson the following year, where he volunteered with the wrestling team. He became the head coach the next season and remains head coach at Hutchinson High School.
Card has led the Tigers to 217 wins and has brought them to the state tournament each of the past three seasons.
Card said his favorite memories of his days at JHS, HLOLJ and JCC include going through the process of pairing the schools, working with all the former coaches, wrestlers, parents and fans, knocking off Worthington for the Southwest Conference title and winning the state championship.
Hanson, Michelson and Johnson
Dave Hanson, Gene Michelson and Kent Johnson were all longtime supporters and contributors to the JAY wrestling program in Jackson. They worked the scoreboard and timer and have been announcers for wrestling meets throughout the years. All three have been supporters of wrestling in the county, both financially and with their time.
Induction is Dec. 10
All are invited to the induction ceremony and events that follow. There will be a meal in the commons that night, followed by the Huskies hosting Pipestone Area. All Hall of Famers and former wrestlers will be acknowledged between the B squad and varsity matches as part of the 50 years of wrestling celebration. The evening will conclude with a get-together at Pillars Pub and Eatery in downtown Jackson following the varsity wrestling match.
