After starting the season 1-2, the Windom Area boys’ hockey team has won four of five games, including two straight against Southwest Conference opponents.

The latest win was a 3-1 victory over Sleepy Eye, which followed an 11-3 win over Luverne.

The Eagles are now 5-3 on the season and 4-2 in the conference.

Windom 3, Sleepy Eye 1

The Eagles jumped ahead 3-0 and nearly picked up their first shutout of the season in a 3-1 win over Sleepy Eye last Saturday in Sleepy Eye.

Jared Heger and Kyle Luhmann scored goals in the first period, with Heger’s coming just 52 seconds into the game on an assist from Hunter Johnson.

Luhmann’s goal, the second of his career, was an unassisted goal 4:17 into the game.

Adam Eisenmenger pushed the lead to 3-0 early in the second period, lighting the lamp with asssits from Cody Mischke and Nick Eisenmenger.

The Eagle defense and goalie Ethan Villeneuve kept the Indians off the board until just 6:44 left in the game, when Spirit Lake scored a power play goal. That was all the Eagles would give up as they picked up the 3-1 win.

The Eagles had as many shots on goal in the third period (16) as the Indians had the entire contest. Windom finished with 40 shots on goal.

Windom was scoreless on its only power play chance but played solid power-play defense, allowing just one power play goal in six chances for the Indians.

Windom 11, Luverne 3

After the Cardinals matched the first two Eagle goals, Windom pulled away with five straight goals in an 11-3 win last Thursday in Windom.

Adam Eisenmenger broke the 2-2 tie with a goal and Luhmann, Nick Eisenmenger, Hunter Johnson and Mitchell Baumhoefner followed with goals of their own to give the Eagles a 7-2 lead.

After a Luverne goal to open the third period, Windom scored four more goals for the big win.

Johnson scored the only goal of the first period, a power play goal assisted by Mischke and Luhmann. The assist by Luhmann was his first career point.

Neither team scored until six minutes into the second period, meaning one goal had been tallied in the first 22:59.
Then came an onslaught of goals.

The Cardinals tied the game, but Johnson used assists from Baumhoefner and Jared Bargen to put the Eagles back on top just 56 seconds later.

Another Cardinal goal tied the game again, but Adam Eisenmenger answered less than two minutes later, with assists going to Mischke and Nick Eisenmenger.

Luhmann scored his first career goal just 30 seconds later, with the assist coming from Johnson.

Nick Eisenmenger notched a power play goal just 41 seconds after Luhmann’s goal, with Adam Eisenmenger and Johnson getting the assist.

Johnson scored a goal of his own with 51 seconds left in the second period and assisted on Baumhoefner’s goal, which came with just five seconds left in the period for a 7-2 Eagle lead.

Ike Pohlman, Johnson, Adam Eisenmenger and Kyle Tasler all scored in the third period.

Joe Voth and Tasler assisted Pohlman’s goal, which was his first of the season.

Baumhoefner assists Johnson’s power play goal, Nick Eisenmenger assisted Adam Eisenmenger’s goal and Christian Schuck assisted the Voth goal.

After a relatively quiet first period, the Eagles had 14 shots on goal in the second period and 12 in the third period to finish with 34 in the game. Luverne had just 24 shots on goal, with Villeneuve stopping 21 of them.

The penalty box was busy as the teams combined for 18 penalties.

The Eagles had 10 power play chances and made good on four of them. They also held the Cardinals to just one goal in eight power play chances.

The Eagles are scheduled to play in a tournament next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Waseca.
