GBB: Huskies open with win

The Jackson County Central girls’ basketball team rebounded from a 25-16 halftime deficit to beat Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 62-51 Monday to open the Mankato Loyola Crusader Classic.

The Huskies made just five of 27 field goal attempts in the first half before coming on strong in the second half.

JCC also had 14 offensive boards in the opening 18 minutes and forced 18 turnovers but still trailed by nine.

Leslie Handzus was hot from behind the arc, making all four of her three-point attempts as she scored a team-high 17 points. The speedy guard added four steals and four assists.

Whitney Burmeister had a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing a team-high 14 boards. She also led the team with seven assists and five steals.

Kaylee Benson scored eight points and had four rebounds and three steals.

Mollie McClure grabbed 13 rebounds and scored four points.

Courtney Kruse had seven points and four steals.

Brittney Kruse had six rebounds and four steals to go with five points.

Chelsey Mitchell had six points, coming from a pair of three-pointers.

The Huskies made 20-of-35 free throw attempts, with the 35 attempts one shy of the school record. JCC shot 26 free throws as the came back in the second half.
