New community ed catalog out
The newest interests, the next season of ongoing activities and more popular attractions are on their way to Jackson County in 2010, and the guide to everything Jackson County Central Community Education has to offer this spring will be inserted in your copy of the Livewire, Jackson County’s largest-circulation newspaper delivered free to your door every week.
Quilting is back — both for beginners and those wanting to take the hobby to the next level; a new how-to on backyard composting is all set to go; Turbo Kick and taekwondo classes will continue; youth will be able to immerse themselves in tie-dye fun; pieces are in place for students to craft Mother’s Day gifts; adults will have a chance to learn to de-stress and organize their lives; and creativity will abound in a digital photography class and Creative Memories activity.
“There’s all kinds of neat classes for adults and youth,” said Pam Grussing, community education director.
And the year’s first headline entertainment event arrives Jan. 12 when a doubleheader of the “Church Basement Ladies” musical comedy performs at 2 and 7 p.m.
Based on the book “Growing Up Lutheran” and from the director of “How to Talk Minnesotan The Musical,” “Church Basement Ladies” is a celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there and features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and the problems of a rural Minnesota church.
From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young bride-to-be learning the proper order of things, the book and music provide a touching, funny look at their lives as they handle a record-breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter fundraiser and a steaming hot July wedding.
They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young and keep the pastor on due course while thoroughly enjoying — and tolerating — each other.
Also packed into the spring catalog are registration forms for soccer and summer ball.
It’s all in a special booklet included in the Jan. 3 edition of the Livewire.
