Transit rate changes minimal

The first public hearing in a long time for Western Community Action Community Transit will herald new changes to its rates and services at 8:30 a.m. next Thursday, Jan. 21, in Marshall.

But in Jackson, the slight adjustments planned will likely be welcome news to local transit customers.

While WCA’s Marshall operations will announce an additional bus route at the meeting, Jackson County’s bus routes and rates will remain unchanged and the rate charged by volunteer drivers will actually go down.

“I think very little should be affected,” said Cathleen Amick, transit operations manager.

The rate for cash fares which utilize volunteer drivers will be reduced from 58 cents per mile to 55 cents per mile because of a reduction in the 2010 rate published by the Internal Revenue Service, she said.

Also, an additional $2 will be charged for processing of ride coupons if riders opt to have them mailed to them.

WCA is required to set up a public hearing whenever rate changes are proposed.
