GH: Eagles drop Cards
In a season full of ups and downs, the Windom Area girls’ hockey team experienced both in a span of five days. The Eagles lost a 10-3 game to LeSueur-Henderson/St. Peter last Thursday but rebounded to beat Fairmont 4-1 Monday night.
The Eagles are now 6-15-1 on the season.
Windom 4, Fairmont 1
Brooklyn Drahota nearly recorded her 14th career shutout as she stymied the Fairmont Cardinals all night long in a 4-1 win.
Drahota saved 40 shots in the game, with the only Cardinal goal coming with 3:24 to play and the Eagles holding a 4-0 lead.
All four of those goals came off the stick of Shelby Veenker, the junior do-everything player for the Eagles.
Veenker’s hat trick is her fifth of the season and her four goals put her at a team-high 30.
Veenker scored two goals in the first period, with the first coming after an assist from Meredith Hentges.
Veenker added two more unassisted goals in the second period as the Eagles took a commanding 4-0 lead into the final period.
The Cardinals nearly tripled the Eagles in shots-on-goal, but Windom Area got four of its 15 shots past Fairmont goalie Jesse Wiederhoeft.
Neither team scored a power play goal, with Fairmont having three chances and the Eagles one.
L-H/SP 10, Windom 3
L-H/SP nearly had as many goals as the Eagles had shots in a 10-3 win over the Eagles.
The Bulldogs scored 10 goals on 69 shots while the Eagles mustered just 12 shots in the game.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of goals in the first period and added four more to open the second period before the Eagles got on the board.
Josie Higley used an assist from Veenker to cut the deficit to 6-1 with 7:15 left in the middle period.
Brandy Kerkaert followed with another Eagle goal 1:29 later, with the assist going to Kylie Willard.
L-H/SP scored two more goals in the period for an 8-2 lead.
Kerkaert scored an unassisted goal to open the final period but again, the Bulldogs scored the final two goals of the period to take the lopsided win.
The Bulldogs converted on three-of-five power plays, with the Eagles scoreless in their only power play opportunity.
Drahota nearing milestone
Drahota has made a career out of saving shots and she nears a huge milestone in that category.
The senior has made 4,981 saves in her six-year varsity career, putting her just 19 from 5,000 career saves.
Up next
The Eagles travel to new Ulm tonight (Thursday) and host Waseca next Monday.
