Earl R. Leverenz, 84
A memorial service for Earl R. Leverenz took place Friday afternoon, Jan. 29, at Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson, with the Rev. Dr. Martin Lucin officiating. Inurnment was at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery near Bergen. Earl died at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Mankato. Osterberg Funeral Service handled the funeral arrangements.
Earl Roy Leverenz was born Aug. 26, 1925, in Bergen, the son of Richard and Ella (Olson) Leverenz. As a youth, he attended country school near Bergen and graduated from Windom High School in 1943. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After being discharged, he lived in California for a year before returning to Minnesota. He settled in Mankato and started his career working in the office of the State Highway Department. He worked as a bookkeeper, progressing up the ranks to be vice president of the Department of Transportation. He retired in 1990 and continued to make his home in Mankato. He became a resident of Hillcrest Health Care Center on Dec. 16, 2009.
Earl was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church near Bergen, where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings play ball. He used to take trips to Lake of the Woods to go fishing, along with fishing lakes around Mankato. He was an avid bowler and loved going to casinos and doing crossword puzzles.
Earl is survived by four siblings, Almyra Hutton of Tucson, Ariz., Carolyn “Kelly” Overaas of Jackson, Orville (Lula) Leverenz of Windom and Lester (Betty) Leverenz of Minneapolis; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Burnette Leverenz; and brother, Jasper Leverenz.
