Alton M. Askeland, 88
Alton M. Askeland of Loveland, Colo., passed away on July 12. He was born on July 10, 1922, in Benville Township, Beltrami County near Grygla to Sivert and Martha (Olson) Askeland. He was baptized and confirmed at Valle Lutheran Church and attended Fairview Country School. He worked at the CCC Camps in Minnesota prior to entering the Army. After leaving the Army, he attended Watchmaker School in Denver and owned Askeland Jewelry in Canistota, S.D. In 1969 the family moved to Loveland and he worked as a truck driver for D & L, TWX, Yellow Freight and IML. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. He retired from IML in 1984. Alton loved the outdoors and spending time at his mountain property in Rist Canyon. He also enjoyed gardening, watch repair, volunteering at the American Legion and Habitat for Humanity. Alton loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Alton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ione Askeland of Loveland, Colo.; sons, Leland Askeland of Longmont, Colo., Paul Askeland of Las Vegas, Nev., Curtis Askeland of Loveland, John Askeland and wife, Rachel of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Peter Askeland and wife, Catherine of Loveland, Colo.; daughter, Nancy Tait of Loveland, Colo.; sister, Alvina Tinsley and husband, Alan of Yakima, Wash.; sisters-in-law, Tillie Askeland of Warroad and Bernice Askeland of Simms, Mont.; seven grandchildren, Michael, Shelby, Sean, Gracie, Luke, Zachary and Emilee; and two step-grandchildren, Matthew and Justin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Orville, Norman, Sidney, Selmer and Carlyle; sister, Myrtle; son, Mark Askeland; and daughter-in-law, Kerry Askeland.
The visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m., Thursday, July 15, at Allnutt Funeral Service in Loveland. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, July 15, at 1 p.m. at Allnutt Funeral Service in Loveland, with interment in Jackson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pathways Hospice or Inner Hospitality Network in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.
