High above the waves that crash against its rocky cliff, Split Rock Lighthouse has looked over Lake Superior for 100 years.
A former Jackson man once looked over those vast waters of Lake Superior too, and in 1969, the lighthouse keeper turned off the light for the last time.
Mike Roberts, who lived in Jackson for 13 years in the 1970s and ‘80s, will return to the iconic landmark this weekend to reunite with other lighthouse keepers and commemorate the centennial moment of the world-renowned North Shore symbol’s first beam of light on July 31, 1910.
When he goes, he will not only bring his wife Mary and the memories they shared; he’ll bring copies of his just-published memoir, “The Last Keeper at Split Rock.”
