Speedway results - June 20
By Tom Svoboda (June 24, 2009)
It was a near perfect night for racing action this past Saturday at the ASA Sanctioned Jackson Speedway for Riverside Sinclair/Houseman Oil and The Performance Center, both of Estherville, Iowa, race night. A good field of cars checked in for the night’s racing and picking up the feature wins were Nate Eakin (Milford, Iowa), U.S. Army 360 sprints; Ryan Voss (Okoboji, Iowa), NAPA of Windom 305 sprints; Jake Masters (Graettinger, Iowa), Performance Center IMCA stock cars; Greg Sidles (Emmetsburg, Iowa), Bohl’s Small Engine and Marine Repair B modifieds; Jason Andrews (Okabena), Loosbrock Digging Services hobby stocks; and Amanda Kaltved (Estherville, Iowa), Yellow Book hornets.
Eakin wins wild 360 sprint
Two different drivers led in the 20-lap 360 sprint car feature race. At the start, it was Bill Boles (Harris, Iowa) getting the early lead from this pole starting position. Mark Toews (Spirit Lake, Iowa) got the second spot, with Nate Eakin getting the third position. The leaders raced in this order for the races first two laps when the caution came out for Greg Valentine (Spirit Lake, Iowa), who spun in turn two and Shawn Van Wyhe (Rock Rapids, Iowa), who spun in turn three getting into the wall. On the restart, Boles maintained his lead as Toews ran second and Eakin third. Three laps later, the yellow came out again for Valentine, who spun, this time in turn four. The restart again saw Boles maintain his lead with Toews second and Eakin third. The leaders would now race in this order until lap 10 when Eakin made his move around Toews and moved into the second spot. Eakin then set his sights on the leader and in four laps, was able to make his move into the lead coming out of turn four. The caution came out quickly following the change for the lead, as Boles made contact with Eakin, causing him to spin in the front straightaway coming out of turn four. On the restart, Eakin was able to keep the field behind him as he held off second-place-running Chad Meyer and Toews. The next yellow came one lap later when Jason Eckard (Okoboji, Iowa) came to a stop on the bottom of turns three and four. That set up a five-lap dash for the win, and when the green flag came out, Eakin was able to keep the field behind him. Eaken would pull away from the field and go on to take his first-ever 360 sprint car feature race event win. Meyer was second, followed by Toews, Jody Rosenboom (Rock Rapids, Iowa) and Jesse Drost (Rushmore). Heat race wins went to Meyer, Toews and Boles.
Voss easily wins 305 sprint feature
The 10-lap 305 sprint car feature race went green-white checkered and it was led start to finish by Ryan Voss, who easily picked up the win. Frank Phipps (Everly, Iowa) was second, followed by Bruce Anderson (Trimont), Dan Jorgenson (Ringsted, Iowa) and Troy Gochanour (Armstrong, Iowa). Voss also picked up the heat race win.
Masters wins shortened stock car feature
Four different drivers led in the race-shortened IMCA stock car feature race. At the drop of the green, several cars came together in turns three and four, forcing a complete restart. On the complete restart, Gary Mattison (Lamberton) got the early lead from his inside pole starting position. He led the first two laps with Roger Verdoorn (Sibley, Iowa) and Derek Voehl (Lakefield) in close pursuit. The race’s next caution came on lap two when several cars again got together in turns one and two. On the restart, Verdoorn was able to get into the lead as Mattison fell back in the field. Another incident on lap six involving multiple cars slowed the action, but once racing resumed, the battle for the lead was fierce. Trent Schroeder was credited with leading lap seven but Jake Masters and Verdoorn were right there. On lap eight, Master led the lap as Schroeder was in second and Verdoorn back to third. When the field came around again for lap nine, Schroeder was the leader. Schroeder led the next several laps with the field right on his tail. On lap 11, the race’s last caution came out when Jeffrey Larson and Mattison made contact on the front straightaway causing Larson to spin into turn one. Both Larson and Mattison were sent to the back for the restart and the field was told it would be a two-lap finish as the time limit expired. On the restart, Schroeder held off Masters, but Masters would not give up. As the field worked their way out of turn four, it was Masters picking up the win by a half-car length over Schroeder. Luke Sathoff (Jackson) was third, with Verdoorn fourth and Brice Bodle (Wallingford, Iowa) fifth. Heat races were won by Larson and Jerry Coopman (Mankato).
Sidles hangs on for B modified win
Two different drivers led in the 12-lap B modified feature race. At the start, the caution flag was thrown when Justin Schuder (Fairmont) and Dan Ahlers (Slayton) made contact in turn one, bringing out the race’s first caution. On the complete restart, it was Kyle Steuber (Fairmont) getting the early lead, with Brodie McKeown (Heron Lake) getting second spot and Greg Sidles the third position. Two laps got into the books when the next caution came out for Dan Paplow (Dundee), who spun in turn four. Steuber held the field off for one lap following the restart but Sidles moved into the lead coming out of turn four. Sidles maintained the No. one spot as Steuber raced in second and Ahlers third. One more caution slowed the race on lap eight when McKeown and Mark Sathoff (Dolliver, Iowa) spun in turn one. Sidles held off the field and went on to take the win. He was followed by Ahlers, Steuber, Matthew Looft (Swea City, Iowa) and Danny Mryvold (Heron Lake). Heat race wins went to Sidles and Nick Dieter (Brewster).
Andrews wins time-shortened hobby stock feature
The original scheduled 12-lap hobby stock feature was cut to nine laps when the 20-minute time limit expired. At the start, John Briggs (Calumet, Iowa) got the early lead from his outside row one starting spot. He would have to hold the field off through two restarts early in the race but was unable to hold off Dustin Larson (Rushmore) on lap three, as Larson made the pass for the lead coming out of turn four. The caution came out on lap three when Dan Strandberg (Worthington) came to stop in turn one. Larson held the field off through two more restarts, but was unable to hold off Jason Andrews with two laps to go. Andrews led the remaining two laps and went on to take the win. He was followed by Briggs, Larson, Matt Harris (Graettinger, Iowa) and Kurt Fothergill (Fenton, Iowa). Heat races were won by Andrews, Briggs and Larson.
Kaltved ends Coopman’s streak in hornet feature
The six-lap hornet race saw a new driver in victory lane this year. Amanda Kaltved led the entire race start to finish, holding off Nate Coopman (Mankato) coming down the front straightaway. She would take the win, followed by Coopman, Jason Baune (Slayton), Jake Schroeder (Lakefield) and Megan Lappegard (Estherville, Iowa). Kaltved also was the heat race winner.
Free jumbo hot dogs this weekend
Racing action continues this Saturday night at the Jackson Speedway, with racing sponsored by Forbes Meats of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Harris, Iowa. The first 1,500 fans into the grandstands will also enjoy a Forbes Meats jumbo hot dog. All six classes will be in competition, with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing to follow.
