BBB: Huskies open with loss
By Dan Condon (December 09, 2009)
The Jackson County Central boys’ basketball team suffered a lopsided loss as it opened the season by dropping an 83-65 contest in Spirit Lake, Iowa, last Saturday.

The Indians jumped out to a 26-13 lead after the first quarter (Iowa high school teams play four quarters as opposed to the two halves in Minnesota) and led 44-29 at the half. The lead was 68-45 after the third quarter before the Huskies made the game slightly closer in the final quarter.

There were twice as many fouls called as two-point baskets made, as the Huskies were whistled for 36 fouls, with Spirit Lake being blown for 26 fouls.

The fouls called on the Huskies allowed the Indians to shoot 57 free throws and they sank 45 of them.

The Indians made just 16 two-point buckets and two three-pointers but used the shots from the charity stripe to earn the win.

The Huskies, meanwhile, did a bulk of their scoring from behind the three-point line, making six bombs in the game.
Nolan Luhmann made three of them as part of his 15 points.

Ty Schwarting used four two-pointers, a three-pointer and eight free throws to score a team high 19 points.

Luhmann and Schwarting were in the minority as both were able to finish the game for the Huskies, who had all but five players foul out of the game.

Trevon Bargfrede, Joel Hartzler, Matt Kocak and Bryce Christopher all scored six points to lead a balanced JCC offense.

Spirit Lake’s Mitch Peschon led all scorers with 23 points as he went a perfect 19-for-19 from the free throw line.
