By (December 16, 2009)
The Jackson County Central wrestlers dominated their own tournament Saturday, finishing well ahead of any of the other 12 teams in the Pizza Ranch/JCC Invitational in Jackson.
The Huskies had eight of their 13 wrestlers reach the finals, with Bronson Steuber, Taylor Menke, Cooper Moore and Jordan Phibbs all taking first place.
Menke, ranked second in the state, was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler after dominating the 140 pound weight class.
Menke opened the tournament with a pair of pins, the first coming in 1:58 and the next a second quicker. Menke knocked off Mike Otto of Sioux City East with a 9-5 decision in the semifinals and pinned Josh Falk of Windom/Mt. Lake-Butterfield-Odin in 5:50 in the finals.
No. 1 ranked Steuber was nearly as impressive at 130 pounds, pinning his first opponent in 2:10 and then winning a 17-4 major decision. In the quarterfinals, Steuber pinned Bryce Hinrichsen of SCE and beat No. 6 Cody Schrunk of Wabasso/Red Rock Central 9-4 in the finals.
Second-ranked Moore also rolled through the 160 pound weight class, pinning his first two opponents and then beating Ethan Lara of SCE 6-0 to win the championship.
Phibbs rolled through the 215 pound weight class, winning by major decision in his first match before pinning Martin County West’s Cam Hanson in 1:34 to advance to the finals. Phibbs knocked off W/RRC’s Ray Hagberg 7-4 to win the tournament.
The Huskies had four runners-up to go with their four champions. Kyle Edlin, Spencer Johnson, Darick Vancura and Tucker Freeman all finished second for JCC.
Edlin got a pin in his first match at 103 pounds before using an escape in the third period to come away with a 10-9 win over Brandon Goblirsch of W/RRC to advance to the finals. Edlin was pinned in the finals.
Johnson opened with a pin and followed with an 11-2 major decision before beating Ryan Schroepfer of W/RRC 8-3 to advance to the 125 pound finals, where he was pinned by fifth-ranked Nate Lecy of Stewartville.
Sixth-ranked Vancura pinned his first two opponents and beat Adrian’s Jake Dorn 4-2 to advance to the finals at 135 pounds. Vancura then battled fifth-ranked Alex Anderson of MCW but lost 3-2 after a scoreless third period.
Top-ranked Freeman used a pair of pins and a major decision to advance to the 152 pound, where he lost a 3-2 decision to seventh-ranked Billy Hochstein of W/MLBO. Hochstein got the winning point after Freeman was called for stalling in the third period.
Paden Moore went 2-2 to finish fourth at 119 pounds, with both losses coming to Austin Kluis of Fulda/Murray County Central.
Kluis pinned Moore in the opening round but Moore bounced back with a pin in his next match. Moore then won 3-1 over Andrew Stromness of Wabasha-Kellog before losing 11-2 to Kluis.
Jessie Regalado also went 2-2, finishing fourth at 145 pounds. Regalado opened with a pin before losing by two points to sixth-ranked Alex Cooling of Madelia/Truman. Regalado followed with a win and then lost to Bryan Andrews of MCW.
After getting pinned in the first round, Patrick Hanson pinned his next two opponents before losing 4-2 and 5-2 to finish sixth at 171 pounds.
Spencer Tewes went 1-2 at 189 pounds but did not place. Garrett Ramstad was 0-2 at heavyweight.
With their four champions and four runners-up, the Huskies easily won the team title. Their 226.5 points was well ahead of Sioux City East’s 167.5 points. W/RRC (162), W/MLBO (159) and Stewartville (153) rounded out a competitive top five.
JCC 44, Pipestone 26
The Huskies had little trouble in their first dual of the season, beating Pipestone Area 44-26 last Thursday in Jackson.
The Huskies, most of whom were wearing throwback singlets to celebrate 50 years of wrestling in Jackson County and Hall of Fame night, took control early and dominated the middle weights in the win.
Edlin started the dual with a pin in just 1:01, giving the Huskies a 6-0 lead. Pipestone followed with a technical fall but Paden Moore won a 9-5 decision at 119 pounds to put JCC up 9-5.
After another Arrow win, the Huskies won six straight matches to take a 44-8 lead.
The rally started with pins by Steuber (2:29), Vancura (0:49) and Menke (2:28). Regalado then won via forfeit, putting the Huskies ahead 33-8.
Freeman followed with a technical fall and Cooper Moore got a pin in 3:11, giving JCC their 44-8 lead.
The Arrows won the final four matches to close the gap to 44-26.
