The fifth annual gathering of friends just outside Jackson for a unique day's worth of Man Croquet play unfolded last weekend.

Local men - and women - numbering upwards of 35 brought their supersized croquet props to the frozen pond at Kent Libra's ranch last Saturday, Jan. 16, for the Man Croquet Championship of the Free World.

Those props included sledgehammers for mallets, bowling balls and re-rod hoops.

Libra and some friends in AGCO's engineering department had heard of the idea five years ago, at about the time he got ice skates for his two daughters and had his pond cleared off for them, so he invited them to try it out there.

And it has taken off since. This year's crowd of come-and-go participants was the largest, he said.
