Fairmont sweeps JCC basketball teamsFree Access


The Jackson County Central basketball teams were swept by Fairmont in a girl/boy doubleheader Monday night. The Fairmont girls won 67-58 before the Cardinal boys were 74-54 winners.

The JCC girls and Fairmont went back and forth in the first half before the Cardinals scored eight straight points late to lead 30-23 at the half.

The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second half and led 46-30 before the Huskies made things interesting.

The Huskies went on a 16-2 run, ending with 12 straight points to pull within two at 48-46 with seven minutes, 28 seconds left.
JCC had two possessions with a chance to tie the game, but couldn’t and the Cardinals eventually took control to win by nine.

Rylie Cother scored 27 points and Kylee Wenzel scored 19, with 17 coming in the second half. Paylin Sether and Madelyn Rowe each scored five points and Brylee Anderson added two.

The JCC girls are now 13-6 on the season and play at Marshall Friday.

The JCC boys fell behind early and never recovered in a 20-point loss. Fairmont led 14-4, but the Huskies eventually got within four at 18-14.

The Cardinals soon went on an 11-0 run late in the half and led 36-19 at the break. The deficit was 28 points a few times in the second half before the Huskies pulled back within 15 late.

Ben Gallagher led the Huskies with 15 points and Thomas Sether had nine, with both making a trio of 3-pointers.

Weston Rowe scored six points; Carson Pohlman and Noah Thompson each scored five; Roman Voss, Grant Freking and Aiven Farmer each scored four points; and Sulaimon Olaosebikan had two.

The loss drops the JCC boys to 13-6 on the season. They host Marshall Friday night.
