It’s high time we stop wasting time on complaining and actually confront the real issues we are facingFree Access

To the editor:

Having lived away from Jackson for almost 20 years, I try to stay out of politics as much as I can. Sometimes the letters to the editor I read in the Pilot are absurd and head-scratching. How we waste time complaining about people and bashing political parties instead of being a united community is beyond me.

I think of the problems we have in the world, ranging from global warming to too much plastic in the oceans, drug overdoses to depression and suicides, and we mustn’t forget about our country being a gun republic, where carnage is laid every day with dozens in their graves.

And what do we hear about in response? The NRA? Hillary’s email scandal? Trump’s collusion with Russia? Elizabeth Warren’s claim of being Pocahontas? Stormy Daniels? And we don’t even have constructive talks anymore without restoring to violence just because our opinions are different.

My intention is to bash neither the liberal nor the conservative, no matter how extreme. What I ask of you is to simply knock it off. Quit this garbage! We should be more concerned with what’s going on around us and what we can do to right the ship and move forward.

The United States has been a leader in science and technology, international relations and even environmental policies that have been in place since Barack Obama and are still working even as Donald Trump tries to dismantle that and deny what is going on in our world. And while Trump continues to slam other people regardless of color, gender, religion and sexual preferences, let’s simply do our part and show the rest of the country and world we are better than this.

It all starts with two important dates that will dictate our future — Nov. 3, 2020; and, more importantly, now.

What will you do to make a difference? I hope it’s the right thing.
