Lorraine Agnes Smith, 92Free Access


Lorraine Agnes Smith, 92, passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville, Iowa on Tuesday, June 26th, 2018.  Funeral services will be held at Union State Line Church in Petersburg, Minnesota at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 30th, with Pastor Nancy Issacson officiating.  Burial will take place after the service at Estherville East Side Cemetery in Estherville, Iowa.  A visitation will be held Friday, June 29th, from 5-7 p.m. at Union State Line Church, as well as one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Lorraine Agnes Smith, the daughter of Edward and Louisa (Johnson) Oddson, was born on May 18, 1926 on her family’s farm in Wallingford, Iowa.  As a child she attended Graettinger Country School through the eighth grade.  After school Lorraine moved with her mother to Graettinger, Iowa and began working at a local café.  It was there she met her future husband Dale Moffitt.  They were united in marriage on June 2, 1944 when she turned eighteen.  Lorraine continued to reside in Graettinger with her mother while Dale served his country in World War 2.  After Dale was honorably discharged, the couple made their home in Estherville, Iowa.  Dale passed in 1952 from kidney disease.  In August of 1956 she married Linus Smith.  In 1963 the couple moved to a farm in rural Petersburg.  After Linus’ passing in 2009, Lorraine stayed on the farm until 2016, when she made the move to the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.  She passed away on Tuesday, June 26th at the age of 92 years, one month, and eight days at the Good Samaritan Center.

orraine was baptized in Mitchell, South Dakota and was later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.  Lorraine became a member of the Union State Line Church in Petersburg, where she would forge many lifelong friendships.  She was an extremely active member of the church participating in the Ladies Aide, Quilting Circle, and hosting many church circles at her home.  Every year, she would organize the annual soup supper, never missing a year.  Lorraine loved all kinds of animals especially dogs, cows, and chickens.  She was known for her ability to drive the tractor like mad when she had somewhere to be.  She was a very loving mother, very easy to get along with, and loved having her family around.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Robert (Lonnie) Moffit of Welcome, MN, Dennis Moffitt of Dunnell, MN, Donna Barnhart of Glena, IL, Allan (Sandi) Moffitt of Taylor, MO, and Mike (Bobbetta) Smith of Jackson, MN; her twelve grandchildren and eleven step-grandchildren; as well as many great-grandchildren.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents Ed and Louisa Oddson; her two husbands, Dale and Linus; her children Patricia Moffitt Schriver, Ann Smith-Wenzel, and Marion Smith; as well as all of her siblings.
