Ten Huskies earn district honorsFree Access

Six members of the Jackson County Central football team have been named to the all-district team, two are honorable-mention selections and another earned special recognition from the South Central Silver District.

Seniors Gabriel Wolff, Matt Haley, Cameron Scholten, Caleb Vancura and Travis Rogotzke and freshman Roman Voss are all first-team all-district players. Senior Wyatt Wenzel and junior Bryson Powers have both been named to the honorable-mention all-district team.

Wolff ran for 1,392 yards and 12 touchdowns this season and also caught 16 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns.

Rogotzke led the team in receptions (23) and receiving yards (473) and tied for the team lead with four touchdown catches. A versatile defensive back, Rogotzke intercepted two passes as a cornerback this season and had six in his career.

Voss completed 74 passes for 1,486 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and rushed for 769 yards and six scores. The versatile youngster also caught five passes for 80 yards and four touchdowns. He also intercepted a pass on defense.

Vancura caught 10 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns on offense and was a dominant force on defense, whether playing his traditional linebacker spot or when he was moved to the defensive line. Vancura intercepted two passes on defense, including one in the state quarterfinals. He was also the team’s punter, averaging 34.1 yards per punt.

Powers hauled in 15 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns and also played well on the defensive line.

Wenzel was a solid safety for the Huskies. His biggest highlight was a blocked punt he returned for a touchdown in the section semifinals. Wenzel also returned five kickoffs for 86 yards.

Haley and Scholten anchored the offensive line as multi-year starters, allowing the Huskies to rush for 227.9 yards per game and gain nearly 375 yards of offense per contest.

Defensively, Haley was an unstoppable linebacker and Scholten was a stalwart on the defensive line.

Six earn special awards

Tom Schuller, who ended the season with exactly 200 career wins, was named the coach of the year for the South Central Silver District.

Wolff, who had the longest play in school history with a 96-yard touchdown run against Redwood Valley and topped the 200-yard mark in that game, was the offensive back of the year for the district.

Scholten is the co-defensive lineman of the year, Haley is the co-offensive lineman of the year, Vancura is the co-linebacker of the year and exchange student Alvaro Gonzalez Garcia is the co-special teams player of the year.

Garcia made 24 extra points this season and two field goals, including the game-winner in the final seconds of the season opener against Maple River.

Haley earns accolades

Along with dominating on the field, Haley also excelled in the classroom yet again. The senior was one of just 15 players named to the Class AA academic all-state team.

The honor highlights student athletes who have exhibited excellence in the classroom, in leadership opportunities within their schools and communities and on the football field.
